Paul Gormley - Bassist, producer

Paul Gormley has played with many jazz greats from Swing to Bebop, including Woody Herman, Vido Musso, Joe Williams, Anita O’Day, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Dick Cary, Jimmy Rowles, Mundell Lowe, Lou Levy, Blue Mitchell, Terry Gibbs, Alan Broadbent, Warne Marsh, Teddy Edwards, Bobby Sherwood, Eddie Cano, Jack Sheldon, Sam Most, Pete and Conti Candoli. He has performed at the Pacific International Jazz Festival four times. Paul has been one of the Los Angeles Classic Jazz Festival All Stars five times, the Sweet and Hot Jazz Festival All Stars four times and the KLON Jazz Club Caravan three times. He’s also been heard with the Bill Berry LA Band and the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut.

Paul is adding producer to his creative achievements. His recently released CD, “Drop Me Off in Harlem” celebrates the genius of Duke Ellington. Joining Paul in the quartet are flutist Sam Most, guitarist Larry Koonse and drummer Paul Kreibich. Paul produced vocalist/ pianist/ composer Howlett Smith’s CD “Let’s Go Where the Grass is Greener”. He also played on the recording. He can also be heard on “On the Edge” with vibraphonist Gene Estes and “The Road Home” with guitarist Pat Kelley.

Since 1977 Paul has been a fixture on the Los Angeles jazz scene, performing at prominent venues like Catalina’s, the Jazz Bakery, Steamers, the Jazz Spot, Donte’s and Chadney’s with artists including Ross Tompkins, Dave MacKay, Barbara Morrison, Joanie Sommers, Jack Wilson, Frank Collett, Frank Strazzeri, Ernie Andrews, Stephanie Haynes, Betty O’Hara, Tommy Newsom, Bill Cunliffe and Claude Williamson.

Along with his jazz credits, Paul has toured Japan with the orchestras of Percy Faith and Billy Vaughn and the Peanuts Hucko Benny Goodman Tribute Big Band. He also performed in South America with Ray Conniff. Paul backed up Vic Damone and Bobby Darin. He was a member of the house orchestras at the Desert Inn and Thunderbird Hotels on the Las Vegas strip playing for performers like Dick Haymes, Frankie Laine, Juliet Prowse, Edie Adams, Jim Nabors, Red Buttons and the Mickie Finn Show. His bass work can be heard on many film, television and commercial recordings. Paul’s producer credits include tributes to Andy Simpkins, Barry Zweig and Gene Estes.

Paul Gormley’s musical talent came naturally. His father, Stormy was a prominent classic jazz bassist in southern California. He was Paul’s first bass teacher. Paul also studied with Fred Hughart, Bert Turetzky, Artie Shapiro and Ami Perot. He was a student in the music department at San Diego State University. Paul believes in sharing his extensive experience with the next generation of musicians. He teaches privately, participates in the Los Angeles School District’s school concert series and has been a clinician at the Monterrey Jazz Festival High School Jazz Camp.
